As the warmer months approach, it’s essential to think about sun safety, especially for young children. At our nursery, we prioritise the well-being of your little ones, and part of that commitment involves ensuring they are protected from the harmful effects of the sun. Here are some valuable sun safety tips and practices we follow to keep your children safe while they enjoy their time outdoors.

Why Sun Safety is Important
Young children have delicate skin that is more susceptible to sunburn and long-term damage from UV rays. Overexposure to the sun during childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. Additionally, sunburn can be painful and lead to dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. By practicing sun safety, we can prevent these issues and ensure a happy, healthy time in the sun for your little ones.

Sun Safety Practices at Our Nursery
1. Applying Sunscreen
We ask parents to provide a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. Our staff applies sunscreen to children 20 minutes before outdoor activities and reapply every two hours, or more often if children are swimming or sweating. Sunscreen is applied to all exposed skin, including the face, ears, neck, and hands.
2. Wearing Protective Clothing
We encourage children to wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when possible. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are also recommended to protect their face, neck, and eyes from direct sunlight. Please ensure your child comes dressed in sun-safe clothing each day.
3. Seeking Shade
Outdoor play areas at our nursery are equipped with plenty of shaded spots. We plan outdoor activities during the early morning and late afternoon when the sun is less intense, avoiding peak hours.
4. Staying Hydrated
Hydration is crucial during hot weather. We ensure that children drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after outdoor play. Parents are encouraged to send a water bottle with their child’s name on it to ensure they stay hydrated.
5. Educating Children
We believe in teaching children about the importance of sun safety. Simple lessons about why they need to wear hats, apply sunscreen, and drink water help them understand and adopt these habits early on.

Tips for Parents
While we take every precaution at the nursery, here are some additional tips for ensuring your child stays safe in the sun outside of nursery hours:
– Check the UV Index: Be aware of the daily UV index, which provides information on the strength of UV rays. On days when the index is high, take extra precautions or limit sun exposure.
– Set a Good Example: Children learn by watching adults. By practicing sun safety yourself, you reinforce the importance of these habits.
– Be Consistent: Make sun protection a part of your child’s routine, whether at home, on holidays, or during weekend outings.
Sun safety is a crucial aspect of our nursery’s commitment to your child’s health and well-being. By following these practices and tips, we can work together to protect your little ones from the harmful effects of the sun, ensuring they have a fun and safe experience both at nursery and beyond.
