What is hygge?

What is Hygge? Hygge (pronounced hyoo-guh) is defined by Meik Wiking as ‘the Danish art to living well’. Simply put, hygge is something you can find in all the little comforts of life. We can harness the value of hygge to promote good outcomes and well-being for all our children. At Fixby House, we believe that childcare should be a ‘home from home’. Giving the children an opportunity to learn and develop to be joyful and comfortable. Therefore allowing the children to learn and develop with good outcomes.

Here are 3 principles, inspired by Wiking, that we follow and has resulted in lots of happy children…

Hyggesnak 

Hyggesnak (pronounced hooga-snak): A hyggesnak is a calm and cosy conversation. We can demonstrate this principle from day-to-day in our meaningful interactions with children. Take a moment to talk about your child’s day at nursery, talk about your experiences and be truly present. Meaningful interactions can help to promote numerous areas of learning, including personal, social and emotional development, communication and language and understanding the world. Most importantly, modelling attentive, nurturing and warm behaviour can help our children to become more well-rounded and successful people.

Hyggestund 

Hyggestund(pronounced hooga-stun): The principle that we should live in the moment. Precious moments with our children are gone too soon, and we should welcome the adventure in our everyday life. For instance getting wrapped up warm to play outside and embrace nature as much as possible. Making time to do the little things that bring you the most joy. Giving children the opportunity to learn and explore on their own terms. As this can help them to develop a great sense of self, and a child-led learning experience which will help them to challenge their critical thinking skills.

Hyggekrog

Hyggekrog(hooga-crow): A hyggekrog is a cosy nook, the purpose of which is to create a space where we can encourage hygge. Try creating a corner that is full of blankets, plants and natural materials. For your little one, this space can be used to encourage sensory and heuristic play, and create a calm environment for them to play and learn without overstimulation.

In conclusion once the children have a comfortable environment to learn in. The opportunities for learning are endless.
