Supporting Communication and Language

At Fixby House, communication and language is an main area of focus with all ages of children. We ensure that all practitioners are trained to ensure that they are focusing on communication and language during every activity and throughout our continuous provision.

We encourage children to use language by singing lots of songs and nursery rhymes as well as small group activities using puppets and musical instruments.

We also encourage good communication by modelling language and positive behaviour within the room.

Here are some tips from our deputy manager, Mary Moran to help support your child’s communication and language skills at home:

  1. Chat, Play, Read! Young children love it when you chat, play and read to them, even if you think they are too young to understand.
  2. If you notice your child pointing or looking at something talk to them about it before they lose interest.
  3. A picture book introduces your child to new things they may not of seen yet in real life- talk to them about the objects, where we may find them and what they are used for.
  4. Talk to your child in short simple sentences, as this helps them understand what you are saying and makes it easier for them to have a go at copying when they’re ready.
  5. Use the same songs or books- babies and young children learn a lot more when they are familiar with particular song or book.
  6. Take it in turns to make noises or speak with your child, as you can respond to their babbling by copying the sounds you hear then waiting for them to take another turn.
